Aikijudo-Jitsu is a self-defense system that was formed in 1991 with the purpose of providing education and assistance to individuals seeking self-defense training. Troy Wussow, a native of Kansas City, MO, started the school with the assistance of his sansei, Manual Rabago, of Guanajato, Mexico, and Martial Arts practitioner Mark Davis, of Overland Park, KS. The first dojo was located in Overland Park, Kansas, and provided mostly private, one-on-one instruction and small mini-group classes. The second dojo was located at 103rd and Locust streets in Kansas City, MO. The 2nd dojo was destroyed by a flood in 2006. Practice sessions are now temporarily being held at YMCA locations, or at Troy's home. The Aikijudo-Jitsu system is a gentle form of self-defense. It is based on traditional Japanese styles of martial arts including Jujitsu, Judo, Aikido and basic Karate. The school's philosophies and training methods are based on a combination of Manuel, Troy and Morihei Ueshiba (the founder of Aikido). The mission is simple: to provide personalized, self-defense instruction for all those individuals that request it. Victims of domestic violence and hate crimes constitute the majority of the school's focus. However, students of all ages and circumstances are accepted by the school. High-risk groups are enlisted through free seminars, professional associations, and word-of-mouth. The school's mantra is: "Courage, patience and moderation—the way to true happiness—achieved through love." AWARENESS - Risk assessment is a clinical term, but apropos in this day and age. All of us are at risk of attack and injury depending upon our individual risk factor. What is a risk factor? It is first an analysis of our environments; our neighborhoods, the places we go to eat, to shop, to hang out with friends, the individuals with which we chose to associate, i.e., our lifestyle. |
